August 4 is Primary Election Day.
And mail-in voting is still alive and well in Washington state, for now.
Thanks to an unexpected decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in late June (Watson v RNC), Washington voters are still able to put their ballots in the mail as long as they get them postmarked by Election Day. The majority decision concludes, “The election-day statutes say nothing about ballot receipt, and we cannot add to the words Congress chose.” Another court decision blocked President Trump’s Executive Order requiring the USPS to only mail ballots on a federally approved list.
Even with this good news, we know the threats to our voting system are not over. These cases and executive orders bring misinformation about voting fraud and the integrity of our election system. We expect there will be more attempts at confusion and ballot blocking.
