The Envision stage focuses on developing greater clarity around your nonprofit’s mission, vision, and values. Some consider these strategic plan components their organization’s “North Star.” Grounding yourself in what was learned during the Listen stage, take time to assess and affirm, or potentially revise, these key components that will guide and inspire your work. Although you will likely not change your mission, vision, or values every strategic planning cycle (or even every few cycles), the Envision stage provides space for reflection and an opportunity to deepen the connection of new board members, staff, and volunteers to your nonprofit’s core purpose.

Depending on your organization’s stage of development, you may need to spend time developing, affirming, or revising your mission, vision, and/or values. Establishing a clear mission, vision, and values allows your nonprofit to answer the big questions about your work:

  • Why does your nonprofit exist?
  • What problem or need are you addressing?
  • What principles guide your actions and practices?

The Envision stage builds a strong connection to your organization’s core purpose and beliefs. You gain confidence in the relevance and alignment of your mission, vision, and values, which sets the stage for well-grounded strategy.
