How a strategic plan comes together as a finished product can vary widely from a simple document to an interactive online publication. There is no right way to assemble your strategic plan, so find an approach that is right for your nonprofit. What is most important is that your strategic plan reflects a shared vision amongst staff and board around the organization’s values, purpose, priorities, and how you intend to make progress towards set goals.

One way to assemble your strategic plan is to create a  strategic framework and action plan for the planning period. You may then support your strategic plan with annual detailed work plans and an organizational budget. For some organizations the strategic framework may represent their entire strategic plan, directly guiding annual work planning and budget development. Regardless of how you bring your strategic plan together, identify an approach that allows for learning, adaptability, and adjustments to meet unexpected challenges and opportunities.
