Urgent: Take Action Today to Protect the Work of Nonprofits

November 28, 2017

The U.S. Senate is expected to consider its tax reform proposal very soon, and we need you to call Senators Cantwell and Murray to protect the work of nonprofits. The bills currently under consideration would be devastating for nonprofit organizations. There are many provisions that would send shock waves through the nonprofit sector by reducing philanthropic giving drastically, cutting off a major funding mechanism for affordable housing development, politicizing nonprofits and more.

Please take a moment today to call our two Senators and read this script:

“I am very concerned about the current tax reform proposal. Experts warn that the tax bill as written would reduce charitable giving to the work of nonprofits by more than $13 billion every year and limit the charitable deduction to only the wealthiest taxpayers. This policy change will wipe out more than 220,000 nonprofit jobs. A simple solution exists: Add a Universal Deduction for charitable giving to the tax reform bill during the floor debate. Also, please do not use tax reform to weaken or repeal the Johnson Amendment, which keeps divisive partisan politics out of nonprofits, houses of worship, and foundations. I am concerned that efforts to repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment would harm my community and damage the public’s trust in my organization and many other groups doing good work in Washington State. Thank you!”

You can also send this tweet to Senators Cantwell and Murray, or write your own:

#TaxReform as written reduces charitable giving by $13M. Please add a Universal Charitable Deduction. Also, please keep nonprofits out of partisan politics by opposing efforts to weaken the #JohnsonAmendment. @SenatorCantwell @PattyMurray
