Nonprofit Innovation Summit: Liberatory Governance

Event Details

Thursday, February 29, 2024
1:00PM – 5:00PM PT
Online via Zoom – This webinar will be recorded

Nonprofits have more freedom than they realize to design a governance system that works for their specific organization and circumstances. This Innovation Summit is an invitation to examine your board governance structure and move toward a more liberatory model.

During the Innovation Summit, we will:

  • Review the history of nonprofit boards and the ways in which different powerful stakeholders have co-opted and distorted boards for their personal gain.
  • Consider current conditions that nonprofits are operating in, and how the “standard governance system model” can interfere with rather than aid in achieving goals and embodying organizational values.
  • Learn about organizations doing things differently, and explore a new framework for governance systems that focuses on two main board realms of responsibilities: accountability and resourcing.
  • Apply this learning to assess the current state of your current governance model and consider specific, actionable changes that could make your organization’s board more effective.

Throughout the Innovation Summit, there will be ample time in small groups to reflect on key questions such as: How can the core governance functions (accountability and resourcing) best be accomplished at my organization? At my nonprofit, who is best equipped to make which key decisions to best serve the organization’s mission? What, if any, decision-making roles should the board hold? How can staff and community be engaged in setting strategy?

Who Should Attend

Organizational change work requires engagement from all parts of an organization. For this reason, we strongly encourage teams of board and staff to attend and learn together. To encourage team participation, we are offering a special organizational rate. We will spend time in breakout sessions where attendees can talk about how to apply concepts discussed throughout the Summit.

Recording

Registrants will receive the webinar recording by email after the event. Breakout rooms will not be included in the recording. If you can’t attend the training but you are interested in learning about this topic, please register so we can send you the recording and materials.

Accessibility

Captioning: We will have automated captioning enabled.

Interpretation: Please indicate during registration if you have an interpretation request. Typically, we need at least two weeks in order to schedule an interpreter.

Visual Descriptions: Presenters will include visual descriptions of themselves and the slides to give a person who is low-vision, blind, or calling in without video a sense of space and place.
